As a missionary for many years in the Congo, i jumped at the chance to join Reverend Andrew Dow on an evangelistic mission to the Baptist Churches in Craiova. Apart from visiting the Church and preaching to the faithful few, we were taken to the Psychiatric Institude at Poiana Mare. It was here that orphaned children, and children of parents who could not afford to keep them, were put by the Authorites. There we saw children, four/five to a cot, covered in their own filth. There was little nursing care and little affection shown to the children by the staff. I cryed, and would have been ashamed of myself if I had remained dry-eyed. Itis a sight which will remain with me for the rest of my life.
as for the resrt of the inmates, that too is a sight, I shall remember, for clad only in pyjamas, with bare feet, they wandered the grounds aimlessly. Not all were mentally ill. Amongest them were those who had opposed the government put into Poiana Mare and were slowly becoming institutionised. Highly intelligent, but rotting away. I knew I had to play an active part in Helping. As a Christian I could not stand by.
